If You Were 5, What Would You Want For Your Birthday?

Act #182:  Learn from the heart of a five-year old.

Meet Bella.

Bella turned five last month and this picture was taken on her last night of being a four-year old.  She celebrated her birthday for two whole weeks with school friends...and cousins...building bears...and hanging out with monsters at universities.

She knows she is safe.  She knows she is loved.  She knows she is fortunate.

She also knows that not all five-year olds are lucky enough to have week-long birthday celebrations like her.  So she did something about it.    For her birthday, in lieu of presents for herself, Bella asked her friends for donations to Birthday Wishes, a non-profit organization, founded in 2002, that provides birthday parties for homeless children in over 175 shelters and transitional living facilities in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Long Island, New York.

Bella still got that shiny new scooter that she's had her eye on, but her best gift by far, was the chance to live out a simple, yet extraordinary act of compassion, at her tender, tender age.  I have a feeling I'll be blogging about this one some more.

  1. I am Nana and Mom to Bella and Lisa. So for transparency...I could be a tad biased. That said, the act of donating the gifts to the children who really need a spark in life speaks highly of Lisa and Matt. This lesson for Bella and Jeremiah will be a gift for life. They will grow and live by two awesome exemplary parents. The Kentucky family is proud of our Bellafly and Jeremiah-Bullfrog.

  2. I love that child more & more as I continue to learn about her via her mom's FB posts. I have yet to meet her in person, but I look forward to it.
